It might be worth asking ourselves when the new film is released: what would Jack Shaheen think? That is even more important in an era of mass media, all-you-can-watch online streaming. Back in 1992, Shaheen cited “cable television and videocassettes” as making it easy for stereotypes to travel far and wide. Whether the new film-makers choose to stand in the old guard or vanguard remains to be seen. He also asked the producers “to respect Islam and to add a humane character, Aladdin’s mother, an Arab woman willing to sacrifice everything for her son’s happiness.” “I’d ask the animators to add benevolent market-vendors and heroic guards who befriend Aladdin,” Shaheen said of the 1992 Aladdin, conscious of the image of Middle-Eastern people that might be made on the film’s young viewers. Shaheen warned that these images would perpetuate negative stereotypes that “literally sustain adverse portraits across generations.” He argued: “There is a commanding link between make-believe aberrations and the real world,” and warned of the negative portrayal of Agrabah, the film’s fictionalised city that he called “Hollywood’s fabricated Ayrabland.” It appears that for some, this warning wasn’t unfounded: in 2015 it was revealed that 30% of Republican voters in the US would vote in support of bombing Agrabah.Īfter Shaheen protested against the film alongside the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Disney agreed to alter the lyrics in Arabian Nights for Aladdin's video release in 1993, and defended it, as it was a rare film to feature an Arab hero and heroine.ĭaniel Newman, professor of Arabic at Durham University, acknowledges that Western portrayals have come a long way from the lotus-eating, Orientalist fantasies of yesteryear, but “barring a few exceptions, what has happened is that one cliché has been replaced by another from the scimitar-wielding lascivious Arab, we have gone to the bomb-wielding terrorist Arab.” While some ‘moderate’ characters have been introduced in shows such as Homeland, he says, “the pervading feeling is one of ‘threat’, based primarily – if not exclusively – on religion.” The American-Arab Anti Discrimination Committee saw light-skinned, Anglicised features in the heroes Aladdin and Jasmine that contrasted sharply with the swarthy, greedy street merchants who had Arabic accents and grotesque facial features. The film was criticised for perpetuating Orientalist stereotypes of the Middle East and Asia. “Aladdin is not an entertaining Arabian Nights fantasy as film critics would have us believe,” wrote Jack Shaheen in 1992, then a professor of mass communications at Southern Illinois University, “but rather a painful reminder to 3 million Americans of Arab heritage, as well as 300 million Arabs and others, that the abhorrent Arab stereotype is as ubiquitous as Aladdin’s lamp.” The original lyric in the first verse of the song Arabian Nights described Arabia as “ Where they cut off your ear if they don’t like your face”. The well-loved soundtrack for the 1992 animation - A Whole New World notably won Disney an Academy Award, along with another Oscar for the entire score - is actually an edited version of the one that was heard in cinemas. This isn’t the first time that Disney has been criticised in relation to Aladdin. Disney have not commented on the search, and although it has been suggested that the lengthy casting process is due to the studio's commitment to finding the right actors, some are critical of the studio’s struggle. It’s been revealed that they’re struggling to wrap up their months-long search because of a difficulty in finding a singing, dancing actor who is Middle Eastern or Indian to play the title role. The film-makers – including director Guy Ritchie – are on the hunt for leads who can live up to the animated film’s loveable street urchin Aladdin and Princess Jasmine. Now only days after his death, the live-action Aladdin remake has been questioned over its casting woes. This week saw the death of Dr Jack Shaheen, one of the most respected and loudest critics of the vilification of Arabs in Hollywood, who successfully campaigned for offensive lyrics to be changed in the original Aladdin soundtrack. Less well known is the fact that the film sparked a racial controversy, one that is still reverberating today. For many, Disney’s 1992 film Aladdin conjures up images of innocence: star-crossed lovers on a magic carpet, a benevolent pet tiger and a comedic genie who would grant every heart’s desire.

While no release date was given, we do know that Hollow Knight: Silksong is headed to the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, Gog.com and the Humble Store. Maybe Silksong will be the same and fans will be willing to wait on Final Fantasy 16 to return to the world of Hollow Knight. Jeff Grubb said that Hi-Fi Rush "didn't make the money it needed to make," while Microsoft marketing VP Aaron Greenburg said that the game "was a break-out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations." On the other hand, more than a few users (likely from the hopeful 10 percent) suggested that Microsoft could shadow-drop Silksong "just like they did with Hi-Fi Rush." While Hi-Fi Rush made a big splash when it surprise-dropped back in January, there's been some confusion about whether that was a winning strategy. Finally, after three years of yearning for more Hollow Knight, Silksong appeared at todays Xbox + Bethesda Showcase, but it does not yet have a release date. With all these juggernauts on the horizon, Team Cherry might have quietly reconsidered its release plans. In just a few weeks, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom arrives, and then June will bring Diablo 4, Street Fighter 6, and Final Fantasy 16. All these great games coming soon might be why we haven't heard anything about Silksong. Xbox appeared to confirm that Hollow Knight: Silksongs release date will be in the next 12 months after releasing a brand-new trailer. Frankenstein Mickey Halloween Ornaments.I think this geode skull looks awesome as a stand-alone piece of Halloween decor, but you can step it up a notch by adding to a wreath or cutting through the top of the skull to insert some fake flowers. Please note that we painted our skull after filling with vase filler but I’ve changed the instructions to encourage you to paint first, fill second. (If this is going to be a one-time use decoration, you can get away with just using the acrylic paint on it’s own.) Once all of the paint is dry, seal everything with a spray sealant or mod podge. If you want your geode skull to last for years, I suggest first painting it with a chalk paint as a primer before painting with the acrylic paints. People allergic to this substance will experience extensive skin reaction even if their skin was exposed to chromium just for a moment. This type of skin reaction is not a mild one, and can be induced by handling the liquid or solid chromium which came into direct contact with the skin. Skin contact with hexavalent chromium may cause swelling, skin rashes, itching and redness. There were some reported allergic reactions to hexavalent chromium, which included wheezing, shortness of breath and some other signs and symptoms of asthma. People exposed to this chemical can also complain about irritation and burning in the throat. Nosebleeds, red eyes and itchiness of the eyes and nose are frequent problems. High concentrations of hexavalent chromium can cause breathing problems, runny nose, sneezing and coughing. Inhaling chromium usually causes mild symptoms. Proper treatment of any medical problem that appeared is a must under these circumstances. Over time, UVA rays cause cumulative damage to the skin.” “Although UVA rays don’t cause sunburns nearly at the rate of UVB rays, they’re potentially even more dangerous, because they penetrate more deeply into the skin, which may result in skin cancer, damaged collagen, wrinkles, and the irregular pigmentation we see as brown spots. “Most people know they’re at risk of sunburn and skin damage in bright sunshine and warm weather, but they don’t always realize that harmful UVA rays are present all year long,” Dr. Why it’s important to wear sunscreen year-round UPF stands for universal protection factor, and this signifies how much radiation (both UVA and UVB) a fabric allows to get through - so consider this when buying clothing that promises sun protection. Ultraviolet B, or UVB, are the rays from the sun we associate with getting a sunburn, and they usually have a shorter wavelength. Ultraviolet A, or UVA, is radiation from the sun that has particularly long wavelengths and is associated with aging skin. What is the difference between UVA and UVB? We also spoke with board-certified dermatologist Lian Mack, MD, who mentioned that we should also be protecting our skin from the blue light put out by our computer and phone screens, which can cause skin discoloration. In fact, according to Beth Goldstein, MD, adjunct professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and founder of Modern Ritual, year-round sun protection can reduce your skin cancer risk by 40 percent. We’re tackling why applying sunscreen daily is every bit as important as brushing your teeth. You know that SPF is important, but what about all those other three-letter acronyms? UVA, UVB, UPF are all used when talking about protecting your skin from the sun, but what do they all really mean, and how do you protect yourself properly with sunscreen? |
